May I ask you a question ?

When was the last time someone asked you a work/life question that really made you think, and then when you answered it, asked you another one based on your reply ? Can you remember ?

Most of the time, people ask us questions based on their own agendas, needs, beliefs and so on. Yet tough, thought provoking questions, questions about YOU and what you think, are the key to discovering things that you are consciously or unconsciously avoiding. These can be absolutely crucial to getting you unstuck and on your way to success.

Similarly, how often do you feel confident about telling somone the real answer to the question? Not just what you think they need to hear, nor a defensive move to avoid having to really answer it, but an answer that leaves you vulnerable, or exposed.

It is rare. And it is rare to find someone you can trust that will ask the questions, listen to the answers, and not leave you terrified that they will expose you by popping up in some hugely public way when you least expect it !

And in today's rapidly evolving technology sector, it's even more of an issue. It's competitive. Knowledge has massive value, and with constant innovation and new technologies, we all want to stay one step ahead. And that's not really conducive to the kind of dynamic we're talking about.

So how can you do it ? How can you expose yourself to truly evocative, tough questioning that can help you to uncover your true goals and surge forward towards them ? And how can you do it in a way that doesn't expose you to the risk of appearing ignorant, lacking confidence or unsure of what to do ?

One effective way to boost your career trajectory is through executive coaching. Coaching works with you individually, or in a group context, to help identify what it is you really need to achieve, and how you are going to get there.

The unique aspect of coaching that differentiates it from other types of individual support, such as mentoring, is that in coaching, you are never told the answer, or what you need to do. That comes from you. Always.

So how is that coaching helps if it doesn't give you any answers ? This is a terrific question ! And one that lots of people, legitimately ask. The answer lies in the fact that none of us... not one single human being, is able to be objective about their own opinions, feelings, conclusions, or even thoughts.

We need other people to ask us questions. Thoughtful questions. Challenging questions. Uncomfortable questions. And we need them to listen really carefully to our answers. Without this, we never really break out of our existing beliefs and limitations.

With coaching, the coach has no agenda other than to help you get underneath what's going on to block you from reaching your goals.
